What to Wear Under There

Fashion has always offered people many different styles of clothing to choose from, whether it's glamorous, casual, racy, preppy or anything in between. But traditionally underwear was never seen as important in the world of high fashion because it was, well, under your clothes.

In the past few years, that has all changed, first beginning with women's lingerie and now moving on to men's underwear. That's right, gentlemen, Victoria isn't the only one who has a secret now.

With all these new options for underwear style, where do we begin? What's best not only for men, but for the women in their lives? Let's take a look at the main styles of underwear and see if we can figure out just what's right for you.

First, there are the briefs. Simple, comfortable and economical, they have been a stalwart in many men's underwear drawers for years. So why have they been around so long? Well, they're easy to care for, they offer support for athletic endeavors (yes, ladies, you aren't the only ones who have problems with uncontrollable bouncing), and for romantic encounters, their snugness offers your significant other a nice piece of eye candy.

However, they come in limited sizes and styles, providing little variety. Simply put, they don't have much personality. Also, some suspect that briefs can contribute to low sperm count and infertility in men, though this has not been medically proven.

Boxer shorts, unlike briefs, have long been seen as the pariah of the underwear world, relegated to being worn by old men who sport brown socks, white tank top undershirts, taxi driver hats and large, foul-smelling cigars. You may have had one of these men in your neighborhood as a kid -- they frequently drove large cars and had wives who fed peanuts to animals on their porches.

In recent years, though, the popularity of boxers has skyrocketed, thanks mostly to companies like Joe Boxer, who offer so many varieties. Boxers come in just about every style imaginable, from solids to plaids to prints to slogans. You name it, someone is probably wearing it. They may also glow in the dark, play music or have a built in condom pouch for those of you who follow the Boy Scout Motto (always be prepared). They offer comfort, freedom of movement, and warmth (mmm...flannel in winter).
