"Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life, but define yourself." -- Harvey Fierstein
Every day journalists are faced with a decision. Do we write about the safe, common topics, or do we dive into uncharted territory? Do we write what most will agree with, or do we write about the taboo and face the posibility of ruffling a few feathers?
Journalists are idealists. We tackle the taboo with the determination to make readers think about that which lies in the shadows. Journalists are courageous. We choose our topics and causes carefully with the determination to shed light on the unspeakable, one article at a time.
Since UNBOUND's inception almost four years ago, no stone has been left unturned. While the clock is ticking writers are given the freedom to carefully select topics, telling the story from another perspective and playing devil's advocate. We dive in without hesitation, celebrating UNBOUND's mission to give every topic a voice.
Our voice, though, is not the only one that should be heard. How does reading UNBOUND's articles make you feel? Does pride pump through your veins, and you find yourself putting your fist in the air, shouting with triumph that finally the underdog has been heard? Do you cringe slightly, a stale taste in your mouth as you wonder how anyone could possibly write about such a thing?
Embrace these feelings. Stand as tall and proud of them as we are of our work. Share them with us. Do not let us bully you into silence.
