“'I
think I was a geek. I was scared of that, but I knew." |
In first grade I got the chicken pox. I had them
in my eyes, in my nose, in my belly button. It was the first time
I missed class for more than two days. I was a good student. I hated
going to school, but once I got there, I made the best of it. I
had four boyfriends. At the end of the year, I circled their heads
in my yearbook and put hearts next to their names. I'm still friends

school, I used to go into school early with her on days she worked
and bring VCR's and TV's to the teachers' rooms before all of the
other students got there.

I wonder if he was just saying that to make me
feel good. I'm glad he told me anyway, because I have always cherished
what he gave me. I wrote him a letter when I graduated to let him
know what kind of person he was to me, and we have been writing
ever since. He is the principal now.
I tossed my cap at my high school graduation wondering
if my parents knew that I drank, if they knew that I occasionally
smoked cigarettes, if they knew I was still a virgin, and if they
knew if I ever touched drugs.
