In 1796, George Washington, in his Farewell Address, warned the country of the possible problems with slavery, foreign diplomacy, and political parties. His premonitions proved correct, and according to Martin Wattenberg, author of “A Decline of the American Political Parties,” “we now have a system of candidates, by candidates and for candidates.” Washington warned of the corruption that would come with political parties, and this corruption is now denying an American his or her right to be represented in Congress. Not only is the current voting system ancient compared to other democratic countries, but also insufficient in representing the people of the United States of America. With a few minor changes, America could see a reduction in both the apathy among voters and the number of tax paying citizens that are left unrepresented under the current voting system.
